SDTT – System of Rice Intensification
- Need based capacity building measures have been taken up for SDTT project partners such as training programmes on Practical Aspects of SRI and Sustainable Agriculture, SRI Process Documentation, Physical and Financial Reporting of the Project, Pest Control and Soil Testing and Exposure visit to Telangana on SRI and Sustainable Agriculture. Also, facilitated the participation of Partners in various workshops and training programmes organized by other organizations like 3rd National Symposium on SRI at Coimbatore, Organic Farming Workshop at Trichy, Capacity Building Programme on SRI organized by Mr. Kishan Rao, SRI Learning Alliance Workshop at Bhubaneswar etc..
- Additionally, Posters on System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and Sustainable Agriculture, Pamphlet on SRI in Oriya and SRI Annual Planner have been developed and shared widely with Practitioners, Govt. Officials, Researchers, Scientists and Solidarity Institutions to have wider dissemination of information on SRI. These publications have received encouraging reviews from various stakeholders for which re-printing of some of the materials has been also undertaken.
- A Market Study has been conducted to understand the market channels and develop a pilot marketing plan for organically produced paddy in the operational areas of CWS partners in Odisha by involving an external consultant and the report has been received. Based on the recommendations future course of action is being planned out.
- ORC has also successfully completed the first phase of Action Research Project on Emission of Green House Gases in SRI in collaboration with Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack and the results of first crop experiment has come out. After completion of the experiment in second crop the results will be finalized and shared with different stakeholders. The major objective of the study was to prove the fact that aerobic rice emits less green house gases than in anaerobic
conditions and also to suggest suitable cultural measures for reducing the emission in rice cultivation.
ORC actively participated in the peace building processes undertaken by Odisha Shanti ‘O’ Sadbhabna Abhijan (a forum of civil society groups and individuals) in Kandhamal district. Solidarity was expressed to a five days event on ‘Gandhi Katha’.
The event had importance in general but more specifically in Odisha context in the prevailing environment of violence and mistrust in the wake of the Kandhamal violence issue.
ORC’s concerted advocacy efforts resulted the selection of 3 Partners by Dept. of Agriculture, Govt. of Odisha to implement SRI seed village program under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana in 3 districts, namely Koraput, Cuttack and Nayagarh.
CWS, Odisha has been a part of the state level campaign against genetically modified crops. ORC represents as a core member in the state level alliance named UNCAGE constituted with membership of various stakeholders from different sections of the society to raise awareness and campaign against GM foods.
CWS was part sponsor of the workshop on ‘Application of RTD framework in State Agriculture Policy ‘organised by XIM, Bhubaneswar. All the SDTT partners in Odisha along with some progressive farmers participated and shared their views in the workshop. This is part of networking and building alliances for advocacy.
