Accomplishments
Soil and Water
Conservation
As all watersheds adopted common approach to the development of
natural resources the elements of impact are more or less the same.
In the case of PRAVAH, 90 acres of additional land were brought
under cultivation through boundary based bunding. Gully plugs on
wastelands are effectively conserving soil. JWDP has created a model
and realizing the value of soil conservation, villagers are carrying
the soil conservation programme forward. Systems have been evolved
for monitoring of works done and to undertake repairs and
maintenance by the watershed association.
The repairs of old check dams and tanks including de-siltation and
construction of new check dam and tanks coupled with soil
conservation measures enhance ground water recharge and increases
the period of water flow through the streams as is the case with
Gohiadah Joria (stream); water table in the well has risen. Water
management and sustainable agriculture with focus on local varieties
and non chemical methods and techniques of cultivation are being
given top priority resulting in improved food security.
The activity like large and small gully plugs and boundary based
bunding have largely checked soil in situ and soil moisture
retention has increased. Further gully forming due to erosion has
been checked thereby forming leveled fields. Because of renovation
of WHS and the newly constructed tanks and ponds, the rainwater of
the watershed area is largely stored within the watershed area. Soil
moisture and recharge to the artisan wells (daris) has increased
significantly making cropping possible over the area.
In BVA, after the construction of Taria tank and other earth
activities it was found that ground water level has come up to two
feet as observed in open wells periodically. Now the well near the
structures hold water round the year unlike earlier. Newly
constructed Taria tank has improved moisture retention
significantly.
Agriculture
The crop cycle has improved. Earlier people did not go for
cultivation after rainfed crop. But now they started taking Rabi
crop.
In case of JSP, the barren land has been reduced from 215 acres to
175 acres through boundary based bunding and construction of small
and large gully plugs. Because of awareness created under JWDP the
people of watershed area are now individually adopting the soil and
water conservation measures like contour bunding, gully plugs, stone
chipping etc. The organization hopes that this will reduce the
barren land to zero acres.
In case of Mahila Mandal, JSP and BVA, the farmers, who were
motivated with the inputs from the trainings and exposure visits,
have brought their fallow and unproductive land under cultivation by
leveling and making boundary based bunding with their own
contribution. They produced paddy and wheat in their newly developed
farmlands in the third year.
Newly constructed tanks and ponds provided enough water to the
animals to drink and to be washed. At the same time the moisture
created by the tank in lowly damp places has contributed in green
fodder production for the animals. |
