The National Dalit
Forum, came into being in the year 2000, to respond to the
challenges faced by the Dalits and the other
marginalized sections of the society in general. The challenges like
globalization, 73rd Constitutional Amendment, the SC/ST Prevention
of Atrocities Act and the Bhuria Committee report.
The dalits are still
faced with the problems of untouchability, low wages,
discrimination, exploitation and atrocities, despite the protection
guaranteed under the Constitution. They are forced to remain as
manual scavengers, Jogins, bonded labourers, agricultural labourers
etc. The children are also forced to become child labour, NDF is a
collective response to overcome these problems.
National Workshop
National workshop
on “Globalization and Its Impact on Dalits was jointly organized by
Buddha Smriti Sansthan, Azamgarh (UP) and National Dalit Forum,
Secunderabad (AP) at Indian Social Institute (ISI), New Delhi
between September 1st to 3rd, 2004. The 3-day workshop was
inaugurated by Sri. K. R. Narayanan, former President of India.
There were four sessions in the workshop on Education, Health,
Livelihood and Human Rights. The workshop resolved as follows:

The state
should support and subsidize higher education i.e., professional,
vocational and general

The Compulsory
Education Bill 2003 has to be redrafted, providing reservations
for the recruitment of teachers

The
institutional structure to provide free medical aid to Dalits is
to be restored and strengthened

To restore the
rights to livelihood in terms of accessibility to natural
resources and effective implementation of Land Reforms
