APPS (Ananta Paryavarana Parirakshnana Samiti) is a network of 13
like-minded organizations working on regeneration of community
forest lands through people’s participation in Anantapur district of
A.P. APPS has created a replicable model on natural forest
regeneration and Common Property Resources (CPR) management
improving the livelihoods of communities. As the area is a drought
prone, there is a drastic effect on livelihood involved in
agriculture and other activities, leading to migration in search of
employment. APPS currently works in 225 villages covering around
80,000 arces of common lands. The network also plays an active role
in drought relief measures in the district by collaborating with the
district administration.

Activities / Outputs
The member
organizations of APPS are actively involved in CPR management to
ensure sustainable livelihood of vulnerable communities. The
highlights are :

Common land management in about 80,000 acres in 225 villages
-
Usufruct rights were achieved over unaccessed waste lands of about
28890 families on gum, thatch, Ber, custard apple, fire wood, honey,
tobacco leaves etc. Revenue department has mentioned the community
rights over common lands in Prohibitory Order Book (POB)

People demonstrated low-cost natural regeneration of forests through
social fencing

Praja Parirakshana Samiti groups are organized to work on resource
management issues

Fodder plots are organized for the cattle of vulnerable communitie

Pisciculture, cultivation of water melon and Babool, was promoted in
the tank beds to benef 4000 families in 15 villages

150 Eco-clubs were formed in schools

Seed collection and seed dibbling in the waste lands

160 members in 30 villages are spraying Neem oil, Neem leaf
decoction and Agronomical methods like deep ploughing and summer
ploughing as a result of training programmes on INM and IPM

Elected representatives of Panchayat Raj Institutions are
capacitated to take up democratic decisions, ensure public
accountability and transparency. They take up micro planning at
village level

The capacity building process has improved the lobbying capacity of
women members with the district administration especially in getting
the usufruct rights on the common pool resources

Collection of Palmyra fruits was restricted to certain marginalized
groups to support them during the slack season

The Journal Pruthvi has compiled various case studies highlighting
usufructs, the existing market facilities and probable improved
market linkages
