Dalit  Prgramme

 

When the marginalized Dalits are progressing to occupy the space the current economic changes have become a major set back for their progress and their livelihood opportunities. The current economic scenarios are not at all conducive for the progress of the marginalized sections.

The percentage of Dalits in the software industry especially in Hyderabad is less than 1%. The recent past also has witnessed a great shift from investments in to the non-agricultural based industries, which have pushed 60% of the agriculture dependent Dalits to migrate from rural areas to urban areas in search of livelihoods. 

CWS Strategy and Interventions
We have initiated 3 new networks in Tamilnadu, Bihar and Jharkhand. We have initiated programs in employment, documentation of Dalit struggles during the freedom movement, Study on social evils like Narayani system in Orissa, survey of the situation of Dalits in the state of Jharkhand and Tsunami relief measures.

Orissa
VICALP has promoted autonomous village level representative body or Sangham in 125 villages in Gajapati and Phulbani districts. Over 3600 families with a population of little over 18500 people are part of our development process. VICALP is promoting people’s socio-economic institutions in all these villages by developing collective savings, village banks and community grain banks. There are 75 women’s self-help groups and more than 1400 women are part of this SHG program.

VICALP is presently involved in promoting a women’s forum known as the Indigenous Women’s Forum (IWF). This forum will strive to give a platform to the voice-less Dalit, tribal, OBC & rural women of South Orissa.

NSS
NSS project area covers Angul district- Chendipad Block. The issues like anti-liquor, minimum wage, atrocities against women.

The Utkal Dalit Maha Sabha (UDMS) is an emerging Dalit people’s organization active in south Orissa since 2000. It stands for upholding Dalit human rights, liberty and dignity and attempts to bring all the Dalits of Orissa on to a single platform so that the Dalits themselves collectively struggle for their emancipation and empowerment.

Major Achievements & Contributions of Partners

Organized a campaign against Dalit atrocities in Puri and Chilika area.

Has built up relationship with National Campaign for Dalit human right – NCDHR since 2003-04 and helped in bringing together three major Dalit forums in Orissa for collective support to NCDHR campaign in Orissa.

Tamilnadu

INSTITUTE FOR SELF MANAGEMENT
The ISM is working among the Scavenging Workers to unionize them as Tamil Nadu Labour Union and struggle for basic rights and empowerment with social dignity. ISM launched a state wide agitation to obtain for sanitary workers their legal rights, humanitarian treatment and all assistance to upgrade their standard of life.

Capacity Building of The Workers
ISM has organized 5 trainings for the workers at cluster level on the theme of labor policies and labor laws, Trade Union Movement, organizational development from village panchayat union level and state level, unorganized workers bill and the special Common Minimum Program with specific focus on Dalits.

NDE – Network For Dalit Empowerment
NDE a Dalit network was initiated with the participation of 24 members representing 21 Dalit headed NGOs from 9 districts of Tamil Nadu.

The network addresses the issue such as Denial of basic needs such as access to drinking water in public well, entry to the streets of dominant community by wearing chapels, sitting in the schools, double glass in tea shops etc,.
